This week, the fifth and first graders went to the Dickerson Park Zoo! We had a fantastic day visiting the zoo, seeing animals and learning about their habitats! While there, students participated in a conservation education mini-class titled Animal Adaptations. Students demonstrated their knowledge of animal classifications, adaptations, and animal knowledge, and enjoyed learning more about some familiar animals. We got to see and touch a ball python and a cottontail rabbit.
While exploring the zoo in small mixed-grade groups, the students worked together to fill out a scavenger hunt. They had to find animals that lived in certain habitats like grasslands or forests, that had certain physical characteristics like feathers or scales, and that had certain behaviors like being nocturnal or herbivorous.
During the rest of the week, first and fifth graders will work together to research and learn about a chosen habitat and an animal that lives there, then create their own Summit Zoo to share with your during our trimester celebration.
Thank you so much to the wonderful parent chaperones that joined us on our trip!
