Martin Luther King Jr.

Beginning on Friday, students learned about how Martin Luther King Jr. changed our country.  Through Time for Kids, first graders examined King’s life, and how he led by example.  We discussed key terms including boycott and segregation, and we also looked a a timeline of his life.  Students were encouraged to think about what they can do to make sure that all people are treated fairly and respectfully.

As a follow up, today, we read March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World by Christine King Farris.  Before reading students looked to the book cover for information, recording each of the following: title, author, illustrator, and picture description.  They also found out if the front or back cover contained a pohotograph, bar code, publisher, price, and blurb.  Finally, students wrote about what they liked or disliked about the cover.  After reading the book, first graders completed a book review selecting adjectives to describe the book, drawing and writing about the setting, and giving the book a star rating.
