As part or our continued study of measurement, first grade students are embarking on an in-depth money unit. To being, we reviewed recognition skills, asking students to name and identify coins and their values. They watched brief introductory videos and read books about each of the coins. Students will continue to practice recognition and counting by singing songs, skip counting groups of coins, adding and subtracting coins, finding equivalent groups of coins, and exchanging coins. They will be introduced to dollar and cents notation and solve problems involving money. Thus far, students have enjoyed reading about different coins, investigating coins, and making their own coin creations complete with profiles and representative symbols. In the coming days, they will begin working on a money math packet, practice money related skills on IXL, and play a variety of money games.
